Born in Izmir, Özay completed her BA and MA at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, Atelier Prof. Rader Soulek, Department of Decorative Arts and Textiles. Doctorate study and PhD at Dokuz Eylül University, Fine Arts Faculty, Turkish Traditional Arts Department, Izmir. In 1996 she founded her atelier in Alaçatı, Çeşme.
Özay taught at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts in Izmir and headed the Textile and Fashion Design Department as well as the Fashion Accessories Design Department (jewelry, leather and shoe design) until her retirement in 2011. She has published books and articles on fiber arts, textile history, jewelry and shoe design and attended invited workshops, seminars, and symposiums in Austria, Denmark, Germany, USA, Holland and Turkey.
Özay, considered one of the pioneers of “Fiber Art in Turkey”, has organized and curated design projects, competitions and exhibitions. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally. Exhibitions include Turkey and abroad (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, France, Germany, U.S.A., Poland, Ukraine, Italy, Holland, and Egypt).
After 20 years of teaching the Textile and Fashion Design department at Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Fine Arts in Izmir, she is now dedicated to studio work in Alaçatı, focusing on the revival of local textile techniques and Anatolian fabrics. Currently Özay works independently as a consultant to art, design, and craft projects, while continuing to curate exhibitions at her atelier/gallery in Alacati, Turkey.
